Private Treaty Sales 2014 #2

About 2 months back, I did a write up on the 1st Private Treaty Sales organised by Historic Motoring Ventures. Now, the 2nd Private Treaty Sales for the year was held about two weeks back and of course my friend Jon and I decided to pay a visit to Bangsar Shopping Centre on what was a pleasant Sunday. When we reached there, we realised an orange Volkswagen Beetle parked at the entrance to the shopping centre. And so we made our way inside and there she stood, the Mercedes-Benz 500K (pic above). It was quite a surprise as this car was not included in the line-up initially but of course it got us all excited as the last I saw this car was at least 4 years back.

With a different line-up of cars this time compared to the earlier one in March, the cars on sale this time were no less eye-catchers compared to the earlier sale. Notable cars this time other than the Mercedes-Benz 500K were a very rare 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SE Cabriolet, a 1980 Morgan Plus 8, another Mercedes-Benz 190SL roadster (a different car compared to the earlier sale), a rare 1956 Ford Thunderbird which happens to belong to a friend of mine and a 1982 Ferrari 308 of which I’ve done a write up on a similar car earlier in the year. The only Jaguar this time was a Jaguar XJS V12 Cabriolet of which I too have a similar model for sale (check out the ‘Cars for sale’ section) and the only Japanese car was a 80s Toyota Celica.

But this time around my favourite car had to be the Mercedes-Benz 500K with it’s sheer style and elegance. Some of the prices on the cars seemed reasonable with regards to its condition but some I thought were just a little too expensive. We will catch up on the Mercedes-Benz 500K soon as there’s already an article in the pipeline. All in all, it was a very excitement filled day especially with the presence of the Mercedes-Benz 500K... Well, here I’ll leave you with shots of some of the interesting cars taken by my ‘official’ photographer, Jon...

Jaguar Mk2

Jaguars will always be head turners no matter where you drive it. Don’t believe me? Then you just got to buy one and realise it... haha... Be it an old classic SS or the latest XJs. Well, here is another head turner, the Jaguar Mark2 or simply known as the Mk2. Prior to this I had done a write up about another classic Jaguar, the Jaguar Mk10. Well, the Mk2 is somewhat a smaller version of the Mk10. Probably one of the most common of all classic Jaguars around the world, the Mk2 was the successor to the short-lived Mk1 of which it also inherited it’s looks from.

Over the period of production between the years of 1959-1967 there were about 80,000 units built. The powerhouse for these models were the famous XK engines which came in 3 inline 6 engine variations  which included the 2.4 litre, the 3.4 litre and the biggest of all, the 3.8 litre. In Malaysia, owning a 3.4 litre or a 3.8 litre Mk2 is something to be amazed by as there are not many of these cars on the road as the most common models available are the 2.4 litre models. Automatic transmission cars are very very rare even around the world.

On a personal note, I like the Mk2 but I have to say compared to the Mk10, I’d go for the Mk10 anytime. The white car below is a Mk2 2.4 here in Malaysia and of course the last pic below shows my Jaguar XJ6 Series 3 as well... :) Notice the significant difference in both designs from two different eras about 20 years apart.

Restoration - Mercedes-Benz W108 280S (part 1)

Previously I had written an article on the ‘Mercedes-Benz W108 / W109’. And I did mention that I had acquired one and am in the process of restoring it… Well, here’s part of the story. I have to say part as it’s still in the process of restoration and should only be completed by the end of June. It’s been some time now but due to some unforeseen delays the car is back on track and will be on the road once again.

The restoration started with the removal of the engine and the entire interior of the car to allow the welders to start work on it. It had rust spots in almost all the common places this car would rust which included the rear boot bottoms as well as the floor boards and a little in the engine bay as well as the doors. Welding was done on all the spots to ensure there is no more rust. With that done the engine is still undergoing a few more repairs before being put in by the end of May.

Well, that’s all so far, will update once it’s done. Doesn’t sound like much work but the time that has gone into it is certainly a lot. Before I forget, a parts car was also acquired to ensure that mine has the best of both and will look it’s best once it’s done.
