1959 MGA 1600 FHC

The MG Car Company back in the days were always known to have made fine automobiles which included the MG T-series model (I’ve done a write-up on the MG TD 1950), the Y-series models, the MGB as well as the car to be discussed today, the MGA. Somewhere late last year, I did a write up on the MGB of which I also mentioned that I will be doing a write up on the MGA.

I will not write much about the MG Car Company here as I’ve already covered it in my earlier post regarding the MGB. The MGA was actually the predecessor to the more common MGB. It was built between 1955 and 1962 of which there were 100,000 units built of which only a handful were actually sold in the UK itself as most of the cars were exported out. For those of you who are familiar with the early MG sports cars, you would notice a significant difference in the design of the MGA when compared to the MG T models before it. The MGA had a more streamlined and stylish design to it.

The MGA as with most sports cars during that era came with either a roadster or fixed head coupe (FHC) variant. The MGA was initially powered by a 1.5l (1,489 cc) engine in its early years which was then upgraded to a twin-cam 1.6l (1,588 cc) engine and then a 1,622 cc engine for the last model.

I have come across an immaculately restored MGA which belongs to a good friend of mine who is also a classic car collector. This car is a 1959 MGA 1600 coupe (FHC). One look at the car and you would be amazed by the condition and detail on it. It has also won numerous awards in the Malaysian classic car shows and it was also a finalist for the Sultan of Johor award at the last 2014 Asia Klasika. With that, do enjoy the pics and as always, I’ve attached a video of a similar model for your pleasure. Till the next time, hopefully not too long from now. :)
